Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday stirred activity in the tech sector as the No. 1 software maker said it would pay $8.5 billion to buy the online video-phone-service company Skype Global in a move designed to build Microsoft’s online communications efforts.

Microsoft said Skype would support company devices such as its Xbox and Kinect game platforms, Windows Phone and other Windows devices. The company also said it will continue to invest in and support Skype for non-Microsoft-based computing platforms.

The deal represents the largest-ever acquisition for Microsoft, which is acquiring Skype from an investor group led by Silver Lake Partners.

This deals also comes hot on the heals of the Microsoft, Research In Motion (RIM) deal that made Bing the Blackberry's default search engine. This also gave forth to speculation that Microsoft may buy RIM.
