Are social media companies overvalued?

I got this great illustration sent to me yesterday by El Muencho. It was in regards to social media companies and their projected value. This is actually something I have given thought to, the manner in which these companies are valued. Is there another tech bubble, are we continuing on the bubble-burst scenario?

Have a look, you'll need click on the image to expand it, which will open another tab.

World IPv6 Day!

Wednesday, June 8, 2011 0 comments
What is World IPv6 Day?

This is a trial period where a number of major web sites will provide their content on both IPv4 and IPv6. This is being led by the Internet Society (ISOC). more information is posted on their World IPv6 Day page.

World IPv6 day, scheduled for 8 June 2011, is a global-scale test flight of IPv6 sponsored by the Internet Society. On World IPv6 Day, major web companies and other industry players will come together to enable IPv6 on their main websites for 24 hours. The goal is to motivate organizations across the industry -- Internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and web companies -- to prepare their services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 address space runs out.

Why is World IPv6 Day necessary?

The address space used by the current version of the Internet protocol, IPv4, is expected to run out in 2011. Without action, we risk increased costs and limited functionality online for Internet users everywhere. The only long-term solution to this problem is adoption of IPv6, which provides over 4 billion times more space. IPv6 is used extensively in many large networks, but it has never been enabled at a global scale. World IPv6 Day will help industry players work together to support the new protocol on an accelerated timeline. With major web companies committing to enable IPv6 on their main websites, there are strong incentives for other industry players to ensure their systems are prepared for the transition.

How, specifically, does World IPv6 Day help motivate change and test the technology?

World IPv6 Day will act as a focal point to bring existing efforts together. For the first time, players from all parts of the industry will be be able to work towards the common goal of enabling IPv6 at a large scale with minimal disruption. By acting together, ISPs, web site operators, OS manufacturers, and equipment vendors will be able to address problems, such as IPv6 brokenness in home networks and incomplete IPv6 interconnection. Also, on the day itself, any global scalability problems can be found in a controlled fashion and resolved cooperatively.

What, specifically, still needs to happen for the industry to effectively transition to IPv6?

All major Internet industry players will need to take action to ensure a successful transition. For example:

  • Internet service providers need to make IPv6 connectivity available to their users
  • Web companies need to offer their services over IPv6
  • Operating system makers may need to implement specific software updates
  • Backbone providers may need to establish IPv6 peering with each other
  • Hardware and home gateway manufacturers may need to update firmware

How will World IPv6 Day impact Internet users?

One of the goals of World IPv6 Day is to expose potential issues under controlled conditions and address them as soon as possible. The vast majority of users should be able to access services as usual, but in rare cases, misconfigured or misbehaving network equipment, particularly in home networks, may impair access to participating websites during the trial. Current estimates are that 0.05% of users may experience such problems, but participating organizations will be working together with operating system manufacturers, home router vendors and ISPs to minimize the number of users affected. Participants will also be working together to provide tools to detect problems and offer suggested fixes in advance of the trial.

What can Internet users do to get ready for World IPv6 Day?

Most Internet users will not be affected. Web services, Internet service providers, and OS manufacturers will be updating their systems to ensure Internet users enjoy uninterrupted service. In rare cases, users may still experience connectivity issues when visiting participating Websites. Users can visit an IPv6 test site to check if their connectivity will be impacted. If the test indicates a problem, they can disable IPv6 or ask their ISPs to help fix the problem. (Sauce)

A Google Chrome Experience...Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - 3 Dreams of Black

Tuesday, May 17, 2011 0 comments

Aaron Koblin and Chris Milk team up once again for their latest Google Chrome experience, the WebGL film "3 Dreams of Black," promoting Danger Mouse and composer Daniele Luppi's Spaghetti Western-inspired album Rome. Visitors can steer through the entire dreamlike narrative, featuring video, 2D and 3D graphics working together through WebGL, all designed to show off the Chrome Browser experience.

To get the true experience of this endeavour you really need to download and install the Chrome Canary browser.

Chrome Canary is somewhat of a mix between the Chrome developer build and the Chromium snapshot builds. It can be run side-by-side with any other channel, which is a new feature. This means that it isn't linked to your other Chrome installs and can therefore run different sync profiles, themes, apps, and use different preferences.

The entire point of Canary is that you can install it and run it alongside another version of Chrome. This means that you could keep the stable version on your system for your real work, and load up Canary when you want to play with the new Chrome features that won't be released for weeks or months. For example, Google has just released Chrome 11, but Canary is already on Chrome 13.

El Vomitar was down because of data corruption at Blogger

Friday, May 13, 2011 0 comments
Blogger on Friday blamed data corruption for a bug that took down the service for more than 20 hours.

Service has since been restored, and users should be able to publish once again. Blogger is still in the process of restoring some posts that were temporarily removed due to the glitch.

"Here's what happened: during scheduled maintenance work Wednesday night, we experienced some data corruption that impacted Blogger's behavior," Eddie Kessler, tech lead and manager of Blogger, wrote in a blog post. "Since then, bloggers and readers may have experienced a variety of anomalies including intermittent outages, disappearing posts, and arriving at unintended blogs or error pages."

A small number, which Kessler put at 0.16 percent, encountered problems specific to their accounts. (Hmmm, I call bullsh*t on this)

In the wake of the trouble, Blogger on Thursday returned the site to a pre-maintenance state and put everything in a read-only mode, so users couldn't post to their blogs. That was a pre-May 11 version, so posts published after that were temporarily removed. Blogger is working now to restore them.

"Again, we are very sorry for the impact to our authors and readers. We try hard to ensure Blogger is always available for you to share your thoughts and opinions with the world, and we'll do our best to prevent this from happening again," Kessler wrote.

The outage comes about two months after Blogger rival Tumblr said a human error had "caused some sensitive server configuration information to be exposed."

Ca$h Rules Everything Around Me...Micro$oft to buy $kype for $8.5 Billion!

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 0 comments

Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday stirred activity in the tech sector as the No. 1 software maker said it would pay $8.5 billion to buy the online video-phone-service company Skype Global in a move designed to build Microsoft’s online communications efforts.

Microsoft said Skype would support company devices such as its Xbox and Kinect game platforms, Windows Phone and other Windows devices. The company also said it will continue to invest in and support Skype for non-Microsoft-based computing platforms.

The deal represents the largest-ever acquisition for Microsoft, which is acquiring Skype from an investor group led by Silver Lake Partners.

This deals also comes hot on the heals of the Microsoft, Research In Motion (RIM) deal that made Bing the Blackberry's default search engine. This also gave forth to speculation that Microsoft may buy RIM.
