When government cares not about the people, but for Big Business...

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

The chief Raoni cries when he learns that Brasilian president Dilma Rousseff gave permission for construction to start on the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant. This, even after letters in the tens of thousands along with emails were given over to her office. All were ignored as was the petition with more than 600,000 signatures.

This now appears to be the death sentence for the peoples in the Great Bend of the Xingu river.

Belo Monte will remove at least 400,000 hectares of forest, an area bigger than the Panama Canal, thus displacing 40,000 indigenous and local populations, and destroying habitat valuable for many species - all to produce electricity at a high economic and environmental cost, which could easily be generated with greater investments in energy efficiency.
